Offshore Safety Course

The RYA / ISAF Offshore course, developed to provide training for skippers and crews who encounter rough weather and problems at sea, was proposed following the 1998 Sydney Hobart Race, in which six lives were lost.

Following your successful completion of the two day course you will be issued with the RYA / ISAF Offshore Safety Course Certificate.

This certificate confirms crew eligibility under section 6.01 and 6.02 of the RYA / ISAF special regulations.

THESE REQUIRE AT LEAST 30% OF THE CREW TO HAVE TAKEN PERSONAL SURVIVAL TRAINING.

The course consists of three parts:

	Sea Survival
	First Aid
	Seamanship and Survival

Time required:

	1 Day
	1/2 Day
	1/2 Day

Course Content :

	preparation for survival
	theory & practice of lifejackets
	search and rescue
	a two-hour session in a swimming pool with a liferaft (as in the 1 day basic sea survival course)
	a 1/2 day covering heavy weather seamanship, emergencies and weather forecasting
	a 1/2 day covering emergency first aid

Offshore Safety Course.

After the Course you will have a good knowledge of:

	the safety equipment carried on small boats
	the seamanship techniques needed to survive at sea in heavy weather
	emergency & primary care first aid
	basic principles of meteorology terminology, weather systems, local and general weather effects
	basic principles of yacht stability
